On the advice of the Prime Minister President S R Nathan has dissolved Singapore’s 11th Parliamenton Tuesday afternoon. A General Election will have to be held within the next three months. For this election Nomination Day will be on April 27 and the polling would be held on May 7. There will be 87 seats in 27 constituencies to be contested in this General Election 2011. According to the local media sources, there will be 87 wards, carved out into 12 Single Member Constituencies (SMC) and 15 Group Representation Constituencies (GRC).

Candidates can only start their election campaigns after nominations close and right up to two days before polling day. The campaign period must last at least nine days.
